Thank you so much for clearing it up for me! I’m from Sweden and here it’s unthinkable not to take them off. It’s also very unusual with carpeded floors (as in I’ve never seen it in a swedish home) but I think our no outdoor shoes (at parties you can bring shoes that you only wear indoors some times (mostly old ppl)) policy has it’s roots in our very cold/wet/snowy/muddy climate that brings with it very wet/muddy/snowy/muddy shoes.
Very funny and interesting to read the answers, and I never really understood the shoe-thing in the US before. 🙂

Actually, I disagree with the “rest of the world” thing. I live in Argentina, and here it’s not common to do so. Most people would actually find it rude (even offensive) if you asked them to take their shoes off at your place. At best, it’s something considered strange. Personally, I think taking them off helps to keep your house clean (less dirt and germs get in from the street), especially with carpeted floors, but I can’t implement the no shoes policy 🙁

I noticed that lately, there are more homes that take their shoes off in the US this decade compared to the early 90’s. Maybe it’s just me, but a lot of my friends back in the US took their shoes off at home, mostly because it was a place to relax.

Not necessarily. I know some families that do and some that don’t. My own family does take our shoes off, but mostly because it’s more comfortable.

Actually yes! That is the norm. However I’m from a Mexican family, so we ourselves take off our shoes like the rest of the world. All our friends however think this is very strange for some reason…
